On 29 July 2026 Saudi Arabia entered the US\u2013Iran war, striking Iran-aligned militias in Iraq together with the United States. It is the entry of the last major Gulf actor that had tried to stay out, and it marks a transformation of the conflict, welding the military, energy and maritime domains into a single pressure configuration. This analysis measures that pressure with the MST framework.

This analysis belongs to the Geopolitical Analysis section and offers a structural \u2014 not a chronicle \u2014 reading of the escalation in the Gulf: not the sequence of attacks, but the pressure configuration they reveal and the direction in which they push the regional system. Saudi Arabia: six months on the margins of the US\u2013Iran war<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The US\u2013Iran war began on 28 February 2026 with the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Since then Saudi Arabia had remained formally on the margins, while suffering waves of Iranian retaliation: missiles and drones against the kingdom's territory and against Aramco facilities. For six months Riyadh managed its position as an exposed but non-belligerent actor \u2014 a balance that spared it from giving Tehran a pretext to bring the war inside its borders. A posture that reflected a strategy of escalation containment more than a position of neutrality.

On 29 July that balance broke: for the first time the kingdom acknowledged that it had struck armed groups in Iraq, in a joint operation with US Central Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What pushed Riyadh into the conflict was not a military attack in the classic sense, but the pressure on its energy infrastructure \u2014 the core of its economic resilience and its geopolitical projection.

Since 20 July the Yemeni Houthi movement has declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, denying safe passage through the Bab el-Mandeb to ships bound for Saudi ports. In the following days the Jizan and Yanbu facilities, on the Red Sea, were struck by drones and missiles; in parallel, Iran-aligned Iraqi militias targeted, for two consecutive days, the oil installations of the Eastern Province. According to press estimates, Saudi exports were cut by around forty per cent, with war-risk premiums on freight rising sharply.

One figure should be read with caution: despite the attacks, crude prices did not spike linearly. After touching ninety dollars, Brent retreated toward the high eighties. The market is pricing in both the risk of disruption and the fear of weaker demand.

This is a dynamic typical of systemic crises: the effects tend to appear first on logistical and insurance costs and on the continuity of flows, before they reach market quotations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraq as the ground of retaliation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The joint US\u2013Saudi strikes of 29 July hit bases of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in seven Iraqi provinces \u2014 Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala and Diyala \u2014 killing at least twenty PMF members and four advisers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, with thirty-two wounded; the deadliest attack in Nineveh. The Iraqi government, through the National Security Council chaired by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, called the strikes \u00aba flagrant violation of sovereignty\u00bb and cancelled al-Zaidi's first visit to Riyadh. Iran responded by striking a US base in Jordan with missiles. The PMF speak of an \u00abextremely dangerous escalation\u00bb.

Here the systemic mechanics become visible: Iraq is not a party to the dispute, but becomes the ground on which retaliation discharges \u2014 an actor whose sovereignty is consumed by others' tension.

Iraq thus takes on the characteristics of a space of pressure transfer, in which confrontation between external actors produces effects exceeding the national system's capacity for control.

It is the sign that the conflict has gone beyond the bilateral Washington\u2013Tehran logic and is redistributing itself onto the region's weaker structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gulf at systemic convergence: the MST reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The MST framework measures the structural pressure a system accumulates across a plurality of domains \u2014 security, energy, finance, the normative order, the cognitive dimension, technology \u2014 and compares it with its adaptive capacity, that is, the robustness and redundancies that allow it to absorb that pressure. When pressure transmits from one domain to another, the system enters convergence: shocks do not remain isolated but amplify one another.

The Gulf scenario shows exactly this. The pressure originates in the energy domain (maritime blockade, facilities struck, exports halved), transmits to the security domain (the entry of a new belligerent) and to the normative order (the violation of Iraqi sovereignty, the rupture of diplomatic channels), lapping at the financial domain through price and freight risk. None of these domains moves alone: it is their welding that defines the state of the system.

In MST terms, the reading unfolds as follows:
\u2014 Observation: Saudi Arabia shifts from exposed actor to co-belligerent; its energy infrastructure is under attack from two directions, Yemen and Iraq; retaliation discharges onto a third state.
\u2014 Reading: the crisis is no longer a bilateral confrontation, but a multi-domain convergence involving the entire Gulf subsystem.
\u2014 Implication: the threshold for de-escalation rises. Each added actor makes disengagement more costly and further transmission of pressure more likely.
\u2014 Triggers to watch: a direct, claimed attack on Saudi territory; the involvement of the Strait of Hormuz, distinct from the Bab el-Mandeb; a PMF response on Saudi soil; a collapse of the Iraqi government under the double internal and external pressure.
\u2014 Direct involvement of the main energy infrastructure of the western Persian Gulf.

This reading remains anchored to the June 2026 GSA framework, which placed the global system in \u00abcritical convergence\u00bb: the Gulf escalation is consistent with that picture and represents a vector of aggravation, not an anomaly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cui prodest?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the CSR method, the question cui prodest? identifies who increases their systemic power as a result of the observed transformations.

Israel sees its regional involvement against Iran widen, but at the price of a growing regionalization of the conflict and greater strategic exposure of the Gulf partners.

Iran achieves a structural result: by dragging Saudi Arabia into the war it converts the last major neutral actor of the Gulf into a belligerent, demonstrates its capacity to strike through proxies along multiple directions and distributes the cost of the conflict beyond its own borders.

The Houthis gain negotiating leverage by turning control of a maritime chokepoint into a low-cost instrument of pressure.

The United States consolidates the Saudi alignment, but deepens its own commitment to a widening war.

China, though not a party to the conflict, sees the strategic value of its mediation capacity and of the energy network built in recent years with Iran and the Gulf monarchies increase. It is not a direct beneficiary of the escalation, but an actor whose negotiating weight tends to rise as regional instability grows.

The losers are Iraq, whose sovereignty becomes a bargaining chip in a tension not its own, and global energy stability, exposed to a Gulf infrastructure that ceases to be a neutral given and returns to being a variable of the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSR conclusions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Saudi entry is not one more episode: it is the moment when the US\u2013Iran war ceases to be a confrontation between two capitals and becomes a systemic crisis of the Gulf, with the energy, military and normative domains welded into a single pressure configuration. What matters now is not who wins a single exchange, but whether the regional system finds a point of de-escalation before convergence crosses the threshold of reversibility. The triggers indicated \u2014 Saudi territory, Hormuz, Iraqi sovereignty, the energy infrastructure of the western Gulf \u2014 are the indicators by which CSR will measure whether the trajectory stabilizes or accelerates.

For the MST framework, the event does not only change the intensity of the crisis: above all it changes its systemic architecture. This is the principal element that will have to be verified in the coming cycles of observation.
